Caring for a soy candle properly can help ensure a longer, cleaner burn and maximize its aromatic qualities. Here are some tips on how to best care for a soy candle:
Trim the Wick: Before each use, trim the wick of your soy candle to approximately 1/4 inch (about 0.6 cm). Trimming the wick helps prevent mushrooming (when the wick forms a small carbon buildup) and ensures a clean, even burn.
Burn Properly on the First Use: When you first light your soy candle, allow it to burn long enough to create a full melt pool across the surface of the candle. This typically takes about 2-4 hours, depending on the size of the candle. Burning the candle properly on the first use helps prevent tunneling (when the candle burns down the center, leaving wax along the sides) and ensures an even burn throughout the life of the candle.
Avoid Drafts: Place your soy candle away from drafts, air vents, or fans, as these can cause uneven burning and affect the scent throw of the candle. A steady, even burn will help maximize the fragrance and longevity of the candle.
Use a Candle Snuffer: Instead of blowing out your soy candle, use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame. Blowing out the candle can cause hot wax to splatter and may create smoke, whereas using a snuffer provides a gentle, controlled way to put out the flame.
Recenter the Wick: If the wick of your soy candle starts to drift off-center while burning, gently recenter it using a wick dipper or tweezers while the wax is still soft. This helps ensure an even burn and prevents the wick from burning too close to the glass container.
Keep the Wax Pool Clean: After extinguishing the flame, allow the wax pool to solidify before relighting the candle. Remove any debris or wick trimmings from the wax pool to keep it clean and free of obstructions.
Store Properly: When not in use, store your soy candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Excessive heat or sunlight can cause the wax to soften or fade the color of the candle.
Rotate Candles: If you have multiple soy candles, rotate their use to ensure even burning and prevent one candle from being used more than the others.
Avoid Pillar Candle Disasters: Be warned! When pillar candles melt the wax will spread further than you think. To avoid damaging your furniture surfaces with a wax fiasco always burn pillar candles on a level, heat-resistant surface. If using a dish, make sure it has a lip or raised edge so it catches the wax before it goes rogue. We reccommend burning in a heat-safe candle jar or vase. Burning our pillar candles in a jar or vase also helps protect and contain the flame reducing the burn speed which will help to significantly extend the life of your candle.
By following these tips, you can help ensure that your soy candles burn cleanly, evenly, and beautifully, allowing you to enjoy their fragrance and ambiance to the fullest extent possible.
